Fleeting Skyscapes and Cloudscapes That Stay With Us Forever

It’s the clouds that make our photos unique. There’s an endless combination, sometimes filled with spectacular colors. And these moments come and go quickly.

This week, Amy challenges us with skyscapes and cloudscapes, with her own set of stunning skies. Make sure to take a look at her post here.

In Mexico, you can enjoy a stunning beach sunset on one of four seas. The country has beaches along the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, the Sea of Cortés and the Pacific Ocean. In this post, I’ll take you to each one.

Cozumel

On The Caribbean

Cozumel is a small island in the warm Caribbean Sea. Every evening was another beautiful sunset.

Along the natural reefs, you encounter sea urchin, colorful fish, brain coral, and the most beautiful sea creatures emerging from the Caribbean (like Aixa in this photo).

Cozumel is a great spot for beaches, for snorkeling, and for diving. We snorkeled by our hotel for hours, even exploring a sunken boat full of colorful fish.

The Caribbean is calm around Cozumel, and the island is safe and fun.

Campeche

On The Gulf of Mexico

The beaches along the Gulf of Mexico are more pebbly than sandy. We spent two weeks in a town called Campeche.

The sunsets in Campeche had the most amazing colors. (I edit very little, just using the built-in photos app.)

During the day, the sky is dominated by pelicans crashing into the water, catching fish. We watched them every morning as we ate breakfast.

Our AirBnB was inside of an exclusive country club at pandemic prices.

We drove to the well-preserved town several times. It was once known for pirates.

The state had a prohibition law during the pandemic. As the only tourists in the town. people from the restaurants promised us whatever drinks we wanted. It was sad to see the desperation.

Acapulco

On The Pacific Ocean

High above Acapulco Bay, you’ll find the most beautiful restaurant imaginable.

Acapulco is not a safe city. Mostly, though, you don’t find trouble if you don’t go looking for it.

We went to the beach and played in the water for a couple of hours every morning, our favorite time.

Our friends Alejandra & MIguel own a condo on the beach here, and I took this photo from their terrace.

La Paz

On The Sea of Cortés

A sliver of blue sky at our resort In a town called La Paz. We didn’t see a cloud for two weeks in Baja California Sur.

Signs on the beach warn of manta rays sleeping in the sand in the shallow water. A store clerk told us the secret later:

“Shuffle your feet as you go in the water, and the manta ray will wake up and swim away.”

“Have you ever known anyone who was stung by one?”

“Yes, my friend. It hurt a lot.”

The restaurants in town are very good. La Paz is very safe to visit.

John Steinbeck’s book The Pearl takes place here in La Paz, so I re-read it.

Cabo San Lucas

Between the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortés

Cabo San Lucas is safe and fun. It’s full of things to do, more than any beach town we’ve ever visited.

It’s at the southern tip of the 800-mile Baja California peninsula.

At the beach of Love and Divorce, you can walk the beach called Love (on the peaceful Pacific Ocean) to the beach called Divorce (on the more turbulent Sea of Cortés).

When I look back on these experiences, really just some highlights stand out. Just like a beautiful sky, you have to enjoy life’s special moments before they’re gone forever. Hopefully, these moments will become the highlights of your life.

  1. Wonderful skies Dan, and a lovely tour! We have rays here on Kiawah now and then and have the same suggestion about moving the sand before entering. I have 2 friends that were stung and it is a horrible pain. They put the stung part into boiling water to ease the pain – WHAT?!?!?! My husband and I have been to Cabo several times. I think it’s one of the most beautiful places with wonderful resorts and beaches. Loved your post this week!

  3. Talk about spoilt for choice, Dan! You absolutely made the most of your time in Mexico. The diving pelicans must have been an amazing breakfast show. Fabulous photos 🤗💜

  4. DAN! I absolutely loved both the photos and the information. We often talk of getting to Mexico, but have only been a few times. I am glad you used the photo of Aixa as your feature. She looks like a goddess wading in the water. If I picked one of your photos and said: This is exactly where I want to be, it would be the restaurant overlooking Acapulco. Wow.

All fabulous photos. And I too have been stung by a sting ray. Hurt is an understatement. And I shuffled like we were supposed to. lol. The good thing was I got a ride to the lifeguard shack when they could help me NOT go to the hospital.

I loved all of this! Well done. Hello to Aixa. I feel like I am beginning to know both of you from your blog.

      1. Wow, you’re the first person I ever met who’s been stung. It sounds awful. Aixa was still willing to shuffle in, but there was no way I was going to. She’s braver than I am. She didn’t go in, though, because I wasn’t going in.

The restaurant was incredible. What a view! We really had an incredible four years. We loved Mexico. There are a lot of amazing things to see, depending on the beaches. A lot of Mexico has the perfect climate, too. Central and southern Mexico is all mountains, so it’s always spring-like weather.

Hopefully, when we’re in the southwest next time, we can meet.

  7. Great gallery! I must say that the Acapulco restaurant image is the most appealing shot of a restaurant I have ever seen. Gorgeous.

    1. We couldn’t believe it when we arrived at that restaurant. Mexico has the most beautiful restaurants I’ve ever seen. One day, I’ll post the cave restaurant outside of Mexico City.
